Those of us in-the-know about the Internet of Things (IoT) are aware of all the talk related to security that surrounds the space. As we’ve seen from all of the revelations by Edward Snowden and others about the National Security Agency (NSA) mass surveillance activities around the world (and especially domestically), insecure IoT devices provide ample opportunity to infiltrate by intelligence agencies.
So this TNW article about spying activities that could (are likely, probably) to happen. The article was about US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper’s prepared testimony (PDF) for the Senate Armed Services Committee where he explicitly stated that security agencies may soon snoop on citizens using Internet of Things devices:
Smart devices incorporated into the electric grid … can threaten data privacy, data integrity, or continuity of services. In the future, intelligence services might use the IoT for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or user credentials.
We all need to stay vigilant and yes, secure our IoT devices!
